Polytechnic Transformation Plan was launched on the 25th February, 2010 by the Deputy Prime Minister. This was a turning point for the Malaysian Polytechnic Education System. The objective of this transformation plan is to enable the Polytechnic Education System to be seen as the leading Technical Education in Malaysia.
To achieve this objective, it requires a sustainable strategy at various levels. In line with the empowerment of information literacy programs, it should be implemented accordingly/systematically to ensure that the transformation plan which has been developed can be achieved. Apart from that, Polytechnic students need to sharpen their thinking skills and be able to think critically in terms of evaluation. They need to have the skills of finding and using information. A study pertaining to the information literacy has been conducted involving the final year students of the Kuching Polytechnic. The finding of this study shows that the respondents are good in searching skills but they are rather weak in terms of evaluation and selection of information.
As for the aspect of identifying information, most respondents have the weaknesses in identifying information accurately and quickly. There are a number of things that have been highlighted in this study as majority of the respondents did not attend the program organized by the library. Most of them rely on the reference lists provided by their lecturers.
Finally, this study provides some insights and suggestions for further improvement pertaining to enhancement of the information literacy programs as an important part of the Polytechnic Education Curriculum. Based on the findings of this research which involves all the Polytechnics throughout Malaysia, we shall come out with a master plan for the information literacy programs in Malaysia.
