Interactive CD Learning Approach Among The Student Of Diploma In Mechanical Engineering For JJ205

Preliminary
In the 21st century, education experts are not only try to find the suitable methods of teaching and learning but also to reconstruct the learner’s personalities and capabilities and to innovate their way of thinking. The goal is to change the education into human development culture in a desirable way. Therefore there is a need to make fundamental changes in the attitudes towards educational system of the countries. This can in turn provide a suitable field to increase the creativity and actualization of aptitudes. In this way, the receptive students turn to the active learners.

Students who are motivated to learn will choose tasks that enhance their learning, will work hard at those tasks, and will persist in the face of difficulty in order to attain their goals (McKeachie, 2000). Applying new technologies in the teaching-learning system enhance the students’ motivation and self-confidence (Hofsteter, 1996). In these new systems the learners realize that they need the necessary skills to use them, so they try to acquire them. Kalburan, et. al (2010) stated that the use of the information and communication technologies by the individuals enables the bringing of the ideas together, the sharing of the information, benefiting from the services more efficiently and effectively and the reflection of the natural opinions. Small steps in teaching and learning have been replaced by large ones resulted in changing the receptive learning into the active one. In short, technology has changed the teaching and learning procedures. Research results are shown that content aspect of creativity, user’s friendly, educational strategy and the interactive element for this Interactive CD learning module in high level.

Background Study In contemporary education, teaching and learning environment should be set in such as a way that students could learn in an easier, economical, and attractive manner. Many developments in the field of courseware have been made in the last few decades with the aid of computers as a tool for instruction and learning.

Courseware is a learner-centered, which promotes self-paced learning. Sung, et. Al (2003) stated integrative courseware provides a complete learning environment, including target content, personalization, feedback, remediation, and various learning and evaluation methods. Besides, the use of information and communication technologies on students develops the active use of the cognitive processes such as the memory, the perception, problem solving, the cause-effect relationships and the independent thinking and the adaption with the specific attitudes.

The technological innovations the increasing use of the internet and other digital technologies have also led to the increase of the use in all education levels in the classrooms (Nanjappa, Grant, 2003). The students have been using the technological equipment actively both at home and at the classroom. The interactive CDs are some of the tools that can be used in the computers. The interactive CDs prepared especially for the educational use include efficient designs including texts, images, pictures, vivifications, music, visions and other multimedia types.

In general, courseware can play the role of a teacher or tutor and serves as an interesting tool for students during their process learning. Indeed, multimedia integration can be used as an integral part in the delivery of their courses and it has become a very effective tool for learning.
Research in the form of observation and assessment aim to evaluator evaluate the Interactive CDs learning module is developed to assist the lecturer’s and students in the process of teaching and learning that is effective for Engineering Mechanics JJ205 subject in Department of Mechanical Engineering (Jabatan Kejuruteraan Mekanikal, JKM) Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak (PKS).

Problem StatementMost of the students have difficulty in finding information for JJ205 Engineering Mechanics module perceived that there is no specific module for this course. Thus, some students had to buy books and find the information in libraries.

Furthermore, difficulty in finding information for this module indirectly will inconvenience them to learn because of no diversity in the provision of reference materials when students should have a variety of ways to learn. It will make it more difficult for students to understand and learn more about the subject and lack of interest in learning this subject. Besides, most of the students nowadays does not preferred verbal and visual modality and cognitive and constructivism learning theories. Lecturer’s teaching style is more to concern for self and non – behavioral objectives.

This can make the students lose interest in studying the subject especially this Engineering Mechanics subject which this subject is the application of mechanics to solve problems involving common engineering elements. Further, students have to be explored problems of particular types in details.
