The Level Of Awareness Of Regulations And Safety Practice

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the level of awareness of safety rules and practice in Science Laboratory among Engineering Science students in Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak. A sample of 463 students were involved (351 males and 111 females). The results indicate that the questionnaire is highly reliable, recording a Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.769. 

It is a quantitative research using descriptive statistical analysis and the instruments used to measure the level of awareness of safety rules and practice in Science Laboratory is Questionnaires Form which contains two parts, Part A is related to the students information and section B consists of 20 statements with optional answers using 5 point likert scales.

The findings showed that 246(53%) of students had high level of awareness of safety rules and practice in Science Laboratory, while 205(44%) of students showed moderate level of awareness of safety rules and practice in Science Laboratory and 12(3%) of students showed low level of awareness of safety rules and practice in Science Laboratory. 

Inferential analysis results using t-test showed that girl’s (M=3.79, SD=0.31,n=111) inference scores was not significant compared to the boys (M=3.72, SD=0.45,n=351). In conclusion, Engineering Science students in Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak had high level of awareness of safety rules and practice in Science Laboratory and no significant difference between boys and girls in terms of high level of awareness of safety rules and practice in Science Laboratory. Several recommendations to improve laboratory safety wera given at the end of this study.

Introduction
In the face of the challenge of vision 2020 is to create a scientific and progressive society, in addition to having a solid understanding of the theoretical, practical aspects of effectiveness of training or practice is very important in the process of teaching and learning. Therefore, the laboratory is seen as a place that is just as crucial as lecture rooms for the teaching and learning process (Abdul Razak, 1993).

Since the experiments undertaken is important for the students, then the safety aspect appreciated when students are carrying out these activities. This is to ensure that the experiments carried out in controlled and safe. To create the 19th a secure job, safety needs to be a cultural attitude because without the attitudes needed this so whatever rules and procedures that are established will not carry any meaning (Ahmad Azizi, 1995).

Safety is the most important aspect in controlling lab and everyone involved in the work in the lab must necessarily the safety of self, place of work, persekitaran and others who work with them (Halimaton, 1994). Studies loose regulatory and safety lab demonstrates the importance of regulatory compliance and safety in a while in the lab was and is the responsibility of together lecturers and students (Nurhasni: 2006, Mohd Afzanizam: 2003). 

With the understanding of lecturers and students on the stage of consciousness regulations and safety practices in the lab then their edicts will be able to guide them to design and implement measures to handle problems that form. In this study focus is given to courses that are the subject of Engineering Science which emphasizes learning theoretical and practical concepts that may engineering applied in the field. Between the core of this course is quantity physics, measurement, linear motion, power, work, energy, power, pepejal, fluids, temperature, and electrical haba. Science curriculum encompass various principles and theories which are mostly obtained through experiment. With the ease of such a science lab for run the experiment, students got a lot of benefits that can be help them increase their kefahaman to the principles and theories in engineering science. Indeed, lab science plays a role very important as a place for teaching and learning process lasts.

Safety must be carried because lab is an area high risk to apply misfortune. Indeed, students need know, understand and practice the lab safety rules to ensure their safety. Thus, through this study, investigators will focus on the study of the stages of consciousness and regulatory practice
