Abtract
This study was conducted to evaluate the used of concept maps or also known as mind maps as an alternative approach to do research and as a teaching and learning method in Technical Vocational and Education Training (TVET) . The study was conducted at the Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak.
The sample involved 33 students of Diploma in Information Technology (DIP ) semester 2, Department of Information and Communication Technology , Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak who are taking FP201 Programming Fundamentals course , 24 students DIP semester 4 who are taking the FP612 Web Programming 2 course , 3 lecturers who are doing research at local University and 10 polytechnic lecturers who are teaching at Kuching Polytechnic, Sarawak.
The objective of the study is to examine the used of concept mapping or mind mapping to do research and as a teaching and learning method in the classroom. Two methods of research conducted through questionnaires and pre and post test to respondents . Among the action taken to promote the use of concept mapping as an alternative approach to do research and as a method of teaching and learning is conducting a concept mapping / mind mapping workshop , download video from internet as a resources in helping to produce concept mapping , notes on producing concept mapping , innovation learning book based on concept mapping and so on .
As a result of action undertaken for six hours had a positive impact on the use of concept maps to do research and as a teaching and learning method from the result analysis pre and post test and questionnaires. Through pre and post tests prove that there is an improvement after introducing the concept maps in teaching and learning activities in classroom. From the questionnaires by the respondents the used of concept maps / mind maps rightly respond positively where it can help them in doing research and also as a teaching and learning methods .
