Politeknik Kuching’s English Lecturers Views Towards Teaching Of (AE301) Communicative English 2

Background of the Study
Due to complaints from the industry people and stakeholders on that polytechnic graduates’ lack
in communication skills, AE301 Communicative English 2 was introduced into Polytechnic system in June 2011. After consultations with academicians as well as the local industry, it was decided that this subject should focus on speaking skills ranging from role plays to discussions and oral presentations.

The contact hours per week for this course are three hours. Assessment Specification Table and Item Specification Table were introduced in the syllabus to ensure the quality assessments and outcomes. At the beginning, there was much resistance from lecturers teaching this subject with their main concern being how the assessments are to be carried out as some of these lecturers were still not used to the use of the Assessment Specification Table and Item Specification Table.

Objectives of the Study
As a result of the setbacks faced by lecturers teaching this subject, a survey was carried out in
Politeknik Kuching Sarawak on lecturers’ views on AE301.

The objectives were:-

  1. to find out whether the involved lecturers agree to the contents of the AE301 syllabus;
  2. to find out whether the objectives of the syllabus are achieved;
  3. to find out the opinion of the involved lecturers in terms of preparation and course and
  4. to find out whether the involved lecturers use variety of teaching strategies and teachingaids in their teaching.
