Abstract
Discrete Mathematics is one course that is difficult for most students a Diploma in information technology at the Polytechnic. Counting Principles is one of the topics which in the opinion of students are the most difficult and this notion of students often avoid answering questions during the final examination or test.
The study tried different approaches over a period of one year in an effort to find the techniques and methods of teaching and learning (P&P) that can enhance the confidence of students against the title. P&P method at early sessions have been using passive approach which requires students to find additional training themselves and using reference books, while at a final session to summarize the method note the singular mind map also staged training system. All documents and question marks that contain all kinds of relevant assessment items under review. Then data analysed by comparing the number of students who try to resolve questions in addition to the percentage of the correct answer. At the end of this study, it was found there was no significant change over the confidence of students, but students still failed to answer with at least 50% correct answer. The approach used could be further improved with fine tuning of the tiered system is used. The introduction of courses in Discrete Mathematics is a compulsory core courses taken by students in semester two at the Department of information and communications technology. Nevertheless, only students who have passed Mathematics 1 during the first semester are eligible to take this course. This course contains among others the exposure and the introduction of computational mathematics that involves the basic algorithm, logic, algebra, numbered calculations, functions, sets and more. The topics introduced is the Foundation of knowledge in the field of information technology. Generally, this course introduces students to the generation of mathematical and logical thinking.
